**Second Grade Math Domain: Operations and Algebraic Thinking**

In this domain, second-graders will continue building skills introduced in the Pre-K and Kindergarten curriculums. Armed with addition and subtraction skills students will start to develop mental strategies to solve word problems and add and subtract within 20. They’ll also learn to work with odds and even numbers and arrays. And with the support of eSpark Learning’s standard-aligned resources, students can practice and perfect their skills while engaging with fun and free activities like instructional videos, games, and assessments. Here’s a closer look at each Common Core standard within the Operations and Algebraic Thinking domain:

2.OA.1

Word Problems

In this first standard, second-graders will solve one- and two-step word problems using addition and subtraction within 100.

2.OA.2

Students will start to develop mental strategies to fluently add and subtract within 20.

2.OA.2

Math Fact Practice

Practice makes perfect! Second-graders will continue solving addition and subtraction equations mentally.

2.OA.3

Odds and Evens

In this standard, students will learn to pair and count groups of odd and even objects, then write equations to support.

2.OA.4

Arrays

Finally, second-graders will work with rectangular rows and columns, using addition to find the total number of objects within an array.

**Operations and Algebraic Thinking **is one of four domains included in the Second Grade math standards. Throughout the year, students will learn how to:

- Solve word problems using addition and subtraction within 100
- Use mental math to add and subtract within 20
- Determine odds and evens
- Find the total number of objects in rectangular arrays

eSpark Learning helps teachers create a fun, engaging learning environment for their students through standards-aligned activities. Each video, interactive game, quiz, and assessment is specifically aligned to each standard, ensuring students become proficient in their skills. What’s more, teachers can track students’ progress every step of the way. With this knowledge, teachers can better fine-tune their cirriculum provide more personalized learning for their individual classroom.

Here’s a look at some of standards-aligned resources from eSpark Learning:

2.OA.1

Word Problems

Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

In one of several standards-based activities, students can take a trip to the Robot Factory, solving word problems to keep production going.

2.OA.2

Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.

It’s the Number Bond Dash! Similar to Super Number Bonds, second-graders will solve timed equations, finding missing numbers to bonds. This is designed to improve speed and fluency with mental addition and subtraction within 20.

2.OA.2

Math Fact Practice

Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.

Start your engines for the Downhill Derby! In this familiar game, students will race to the finish line by solving math equations along the way.

2.OA.3

Odds and Evens

Determine whether a group of objects (up to 20) has an odd or even number of members, e.g., by pairing objects or counting them by 2s; write an equation to express an even number as a sum of two equal addends.

Join Odd Todd and Even Steven for a fun, instructional song that introduces the idea of odd and even numbers!

2.OA.4

Arrays

Use addition to find the total number of objects arranged in rectangular arrays with up to 5 rows and up to 5 columns; write an equation to express the total as a sum of equal addends.

In one of several instructional videos, students will visually learn how to add using arrays.
