Pre-K Math Domain: Counting and Cardinality
Pre-K students will be introduced to brand-new mathematical concepts and ideas in this domain, including reciting numbers and counting objects. Students will learn and apply their knowledge and skills through practice, repetition, and consistency through seven total standards. Here’s a more detailed breakdown of each standard within this domain:
Count to 10
Students will learn to recite numbers one through 20 in order.
Numbers Before and After
Students will begin to understand the sequence of numbers and which ones come before or after one another.
Match Numbers to Groups
In this standard, students will begin matching numbers to groups by representing a number of objects with a written numeral (0-10).
Count Objects
Students will demonstrate one-to-one correspondence when counting sets of objects in different configurations.
Count How Many
Students will learn to count 0-10 objects.
More or Less?
Students will be introduced to comparative language such as ‘equal to’ and ‘more or less than’ to describe and compare collections of objects.
Match More Numbers
Through more practice and repetition, students will begin to understand the relationship between written numerals (0-10) and quantities.
Counting and Cardinality is the only domain included in eSpark’s Pre-K math curriculum. Students can expect to learn concepts like:
eSpark Learning provides standards-aligned resources for Pre-K students, helping them understand and grow their knowledge in these brand-new mathematical concepts. Each of our resources and activities is aligned to the Common Core, ensuring Pre-K students will be prepped for next year’s standards, all while providing engaging activities that help them learn and retain knowledge more quickly.
With eSpark, teachers will also be able to closely track students’ progress within each standard to provide more individualized learning to meet their classroom’s and students’ unique needs.
Count to 10
Recite numbers in order 1-20 (rote counting).
Practice makes perfect! For this standard, eSpark Learning provides exciting, go-as-you-learn activities and assignments that help students with repetition, reciting, and sequence.
Numbers Before and After
In the sequence of 1-10, understand that numbers come "before" or "after" one another.
Now that Pre-K students can recite numbers in order, eSpark’s resources will help introduce the idea of before and after. Which number comes after 8? Which number comes before 4? Through hands-on learning assignments, students will have a more robust understanding of order and sequence.
Match Numbers to Groups
Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0-10 (with 0 representing a count of no objects).
In this standard, students will be introduced to the relationship between numbers and objects. Through eSpark’s curriculum, teachers can generate excitement with interactive activities that help students match numbers to different groups and objects.
Count Objects
Demonstrate 1:1 correspondence by counting sets of up to 10 objects, regardless of configuration (i.e., line, stack, array, scattered).
To build on their knowledge of objects and numbers, eSpark Learning implements visually engaging games and activities to help students better count objects — no matter how they appear in front of them.
Count How Many
Count 0-10 objects.
Introducing brand-new concepts to such young minds requires consistency, practice, and repetition. eSpark’s resources help make this part of the learning process a lot more fun and engaging for Pre-K students with visual aids, videos, and activities that help them master the skill of counting objects.
More or Less?
Use comparative language such as more/less than, equal to, to compare and describe collections of objects.
As students begin to strengthen their knowledge of objects and numerals, eSpark helps introduce the concept of comparing them. Through games and hands-on interaction, students will start to understand language like ‘more or less than’ and ‘equal to’ when describing and comparing objects.
Match More Numbers
Understand the relationship between quantities and written numerals (1-10).
Finally, students will apply what they’ve learned in previous standards to perfect their knowledge of written numerals and quantities. Once again, eSpark Learning supports teachers as they try to reinforce previously taught lessons with different activities that will help students apply the same knowledge in new and exciting ways.
