Finding the Right Differentiation Platform for Illinois Classrooms

Interview: Anna Hechler, Technology Director at Western CUSD 12

In this interview, Technology Director Anna Hechler explains how her district is consistently addressing students’ diverse learning needs.

Why did Western CUSD 12 initially partner with eSpark Learning?

We were looking for a platform that would differentiate within our classrooms. We believe that every kid should have a chance to learn at their level and eSpark allowed us to do that. eSpark also blends teaching and technology to get the most out of students.

“We believe that every kid should have a chance to learn at their level and eSpark allowed us to do that.”

How has eSpark supported effective teaching and learning at Western CUSD?

It has allowed us to take students who sometimes struggle and also those students who need to be pushed in the classroom and give them work that is fun and engaging. It also has helped our teachers be able to work more one on one or small group because students are independently working without needing much guidance.

How have you seen students grow while using eSpark?

Since we started with eSpark our numbers on the MAP test have increased. The first year our fall scores showed that our average percentile was 37, this year it was 49. We have grown from fall to winter on an average of 3 points each year. Also, our reading and math percentiles have increased by 10 or more since we started implementing eSpark into our curriculum.

Would you recommend eSpark to other districts?

Absolutely! The way the students are engaged in their learning is a great resource for the classroom. Plus eSpark utilizes videos and games so students are having fun while learning.
